While today is a reminder of this specific injustice committed against Japanese Americans by the U.S. government, I hope that reading and learning about it allows for a more empathetic and accepting world as a whole....

As always, I tried my best to select something for all the reading tastes under the gigantic crime umbrella: you’ll find thrillers, Billy Jensen’s new true crime book, a mystery for foodies, a missing magician by the author of Oona Out of Order, and a new Kathy Reichs book for Bones fans (​​the 21st Temperance Brennan book, if you’re looking for a long series to dive into)....

So I scoured Etsy and came up with some fantastic options for super sturdy, guaranteed-to-function-properly, heavyweight bookends that are up for the cookbook challenge. It turns out there are quite a few delightful culinary themed bookends out there, but not all of them are made of strong material. If I didn’t think a bookend was up to the very serious task of supporting tomes like How to Cook Everything or Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking, it didn’t make this list....

I’ll note that there are a number of such lists of author-artists out there. The UNESCO Courier devoted an issue to such authors. But the lists are overwhelmingly male. The Courier, for instance, features only one woman among their 26 writer-artists, and she is mostly noted for having been the friend of male artists. The lists are even more overwhelmingly white. Although Lorraine Hansberry, for instance, studied painting, I didn’t find her on a single list....

The end of the year tends to be a bit slower for new releases, but there are still plenty of excellent books releasing this month. Favorite middle grade authors Jason Reynolds and Wendy Xu return with new charming graphic novels, and two of my 3-year-old daughter’s favorite book series have new books being released in the series. There are also two gorgeous picture books celebrating Black history that I’m anticipating will be on some award lists next year....
